Laminate Flooring Installation: Step-by-Step Guide

Laminate installation is one of the few renovation jobs that most DIY homeowners can handle. The key is to properly prepare the subfloor and follow the correct technique. This article provides a detailed breakdown of all stages.

Subfloor Preparation

The subfloor must be level, dry and clean. The permissible deviation is no more than 2 mm per 2 m. All high spots must be ground down and dips filled. The moisture content of the subfloor must not exceed 3%.

Laminate Acclimatisation

Before installation, the laminate must lie flat in the room for 48–72 hours. This allows the material to acclimatise to the room's temperature and humidity, preventing deformation after installation.

Installation Technique

Lay the laminate perpendicular to the window — this makes the seams less noticeable. Leave an expansion gap of 10–15 mm at the walls. Use 2–3 mm thick underlay for sound insulation and to level minor unevenness in the subfloor.
