7 Plumbing Tips for Homeowners

Even if you're not planning to do repairs yourself, basic plumbing knowledge will help you spot a problem in time, avoid overpaying for unnecessary work, and explain the task clearly to a specialist.

Know Where Your Main Shut-Off Valve Is

In any emergency — a burst pipe or a major leak — the first thing to do is shut off the water. Make sure all family members know where the main valve is and how to use it.

Never Pour Grease Down the Drain

Grease solidifies in pipes and eventually blocks them completely. This is one of the most common causes of blockages, which are expensive to clear. Collect grease in a separate container and dispose of it with solid waste.

Regularly Check Water Pressure

Excessively high water pressure (above 3–4 bar) leads to accelerated wear on taps, mixers and joints. Install a pressure reducer if the pressure in your system is too high.
